There really is no one way to do beauty, which is why I love beauty and skin care so much. Its a great way to explore cultures and try new techniques. Today we are going to discuss my love and appreciation for Korean Beauty, K-Beauty for short, and more specially sheet masks. Sheet mask are a simple way to ease yourself into the world of Korean skincare. In recent years it has become a duty for women to not only beat their faces and look good for the gram, but to show off their beautiful natural skin as well. These easy to use, inexpensive masks give your skin a hydrating boost. You can find mask to cater to any and all of your skins needs. Whether it be to brighten, moisturize, mattify or detoxify these mini facials should be a staple in your beauty kit.
In relation to some skin care techniques sheet masks are fairly new on the scene. However, their impact has been everlasting. From Instagram to Snapchat, the social media buzz surrounding the benefits of these masks are next level. But why exactly are these masks so great? The answer may have you filling your online shopping carts with these mini spa treats sooner than you think.
What Is A Sheet Mask?
Lets cut straight to the chase. What exactly is a Korean face mask, or sheet mask? Sheet masks, ladies and gents, are typically a microfibre or hydrogel mask made for single-use. The mask itself has been soaked in essences containing an array of skin loving serums. Ingredients ranging from skin rejuvenating aloe vera to tea tree oil for acne.
How To Use A Sheet Mask
Its a actually very simple. All you need to do is line the mask up with your face, there are holes for your eyes, nose and mouth and then just smooth the mask long your face. The mask is designed to fit the contours of your face. Its recommended that you let the mask rest for a min of 15 minutes, allowing your skin to absorb all those lovely ingredients. It actually isn't recommended to all the mask to sit longer than 20 mins or when the mask start to dry. Allowing to sit that long can reverse the effects of the mask, causing the cotton sheet to dry the moisture out of your skin if it becomes dry. If applied correctly, you should like a character straight out of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as depicted below.
What Are The Benefits Of Sheet Masks
For starter Korean sheet masks are very relaxing. These particular masks act as an occlusive or a barrier to stop moisture and the products from escaping your skin. As I mentioned early they are soaked and infused with active ingredients that work to penetrate the skin's top most layer while the cotton mask helps seal it in. Whereas with other moisturizers, most of the product evaporates off of the skin within minutes and can take a long time for your body to absorb it. The microfiber sheet creates a nice barrier between the product on your skin and the air giving you time to fully absorb all that goodness.
Others benefits of sheet masks are that they are relatively mess free. Once you're done just toss the mask in trash and proceed with your day. Whereas, if you're were doing a mud mask you would have to rinse the product off which can take up some time. One of the main ingredients in these power packs of skin magic is water. We all know water is great for your skin. The water actually helps your skin absorb the active ingredients in the mask better, ultimately maximizing the treatment. As an added bonus, If there is any serum left in the package just take that and rub you neck, chest, knees or elbow, basically anywhere you feel is in need. Waste not, want not.
How Often Should You Use Sheet Masks
There is no limit to the amount of sheet masks you can use. Some use one sheet mask a day, others use one once a week or 2-3 times per week.
How To Fit Your Sheet Masks Into Your Beauty Regimen
If you've read my other blog posts about my skin care routine and products that I use, I bet you're wondering how I manage to fit the masks into my regimen. Well, what I like to do is after I've cleansed with my Mario Badescu Acne Facial Cleanser, exfoliated with Lush Cosmetic's Cup O' Coffee and toned, I grab a sheet mask from drawer and commit to a relaxing 15 mins of moisturizing bliss. I try to use a sheet mask once a week, sometimes twice depending on the condition of my skin.
Below are pictures and links to Korean sheet masks that I have used and enjoyed. I have very sensitive skin, so if you are fearful of irritation do not worry. Cut a little slit in the package and squeeze out some of the serum and do a little tester patch to see if you get an adverse side effects. I usually buy Sephora's brand of masks because they are inexpensive but, if you have a TJ Maxx or Marshalls near you they also sell sheet masks for the low!
