Growing up I shied away from makeup completely. I was alway reminded either by advertisements, people or the shade range that makeup wasn't for girls like me. Yes, I am a woman of color and it can be hard at times to find brands that appreciate all of us women, because we come in so many different shades, shapes and sizes. The products either left a white cast on my face or was too light. People would actually say to me that I was too "dark for makeup" and to "leave that to the lighter girls". Advertisement would only feature models with fairer skin further backing negative statements that I would get. I felt alienated and alone, but thankfully I had a very supportive mother, though she was fairer skinned and didn't have the same issues I had, she took me to the MAC and Lancome counter in Dillards and asked them to match and give me samples to take home. The wonderful women at the counters complemented me on my skin tone and made me feel like a normal teenage girl, something that I had been longing for. Today, it is a personal goal of mine to make sure everyone, regardless of skin texture, type, or tone that I find products that work well for all, especially those who may have felt alienated like I did.
I have decided to put together a list of high end foundations that have worked great for me and my complexion. I will be doing a drug store version of this post soon so be on the look out for that. The products listed are not in any particular order but I did take the time to grade them on a few things that I find to be important when shopping for makeup. First, the price , as I said this is more high end but I did want to let you guys know if I felt the product was worth the money spent. Second, inclusiveness , I think it is very important to research and know who you are giving your money to and what they stand for. For me, a major key is how well they incorporate all women regardless of skin tone. And lastly, formula , did this product do what it claimed it would? Did it irritate my skin? etc.

Valued at $34 USD , 32ml, this foundation is very reasonably priced. Especially considering the celebrity powerhouse, Rihanna, who created this brand. She could've charged way more and patrons would have easily purchased the product without question. The container comes equipped with a pump in a glass container, which I love. I dislike foundations that you have to pour out, it becomes messy and wasteful. I will say that the formula of the foundation is on the watery side so the mouth around the pump tends to get covered in foundation.
Unless you were living under a rock, then you know Rihanna took the makeup industry by storm releasing one of the most inclusive foundation launches in years. Most brands release a few shades, mainly on the fairer side of the spectrum, and weeks later release deeper shades for us darker women. Thus, forcing women of color to have wait longer than their fairer skinned makeup lovers. Rihanna on the other hand decided to put an end to this offensive and exclusive business model by releasing over 35 various shades to match all women right from the start.
Claiming to be a soft matte buildable longer foundation with medium to full coverage, the Pro Filt'r Foundation by Fenty Beauty does live up to its claims. When I first purchased this foundation I used it every single day, their was no white cast, and the foundation settled into my skin nicely. I have oily skin, as you know, and I felt like I honestly found a product that stayed put throughout the day and didn't break my bank entirely. However, I do find that this foundation is more watery than others that I have used, but it has lasted me longer than another. Due to its more watery nature it tends to be a little hard to apply. It drys quickly so you have to move fast.
With a price point of $58 USD and 28ml I do feel as though this foundation is greatly over priced. I received it as a gift and am greatly appreciative of it, but I don't think I would've purchased this item on my own. In my personal opinion, you are more so paying for the name and not necessarily the product. I do like the overall composition of the container, although it is plastic. The design is great and easy to use. The airless pump always for clean use and you can see when its time to restock!
Available in 16 shades the Etherealist Skin Illuminating Foundation, compared to Fenty Beauty, is not as inclusive has it could be. 4 of 16 shades are considered deep and the other 12 being more for fairer skinned women. The shade ranges lacks a nice even broad spectrum.
Now I know I have been negative in the other two categories, but I must say I love the formula of this product. I love using this foundation in the winter as my skin can get a little dry. This product goes on nice and smooth and feels so hydrating. It is a light weight foundation, so if you are a full coverage kind of girl this may not be for you.
The Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation retails for $64 USD and each glass bottle contains 30ml. There is also a travel sized version with 18ml for $42 USD. This foundation is worth every penny. It comes in a matte glass container donned with the signature Armani black print and an easy to use pump to make sure you utilize every oz of this product.
With 24 shades, The Luminous Silk Foundation has a diverse range of colors to choose from. Although I feel as though you can never have too many shades for your consumers, there are still areas for improvement.
The range of shades may not be to my complete liking but formula alone makes it my favorite foundation. A friend of mine actually made me buy this foundation claiming that I would never regret it and I don't! Honestly, using this foundation for the first time was like I found my soulmate. This formula is so creamy and lightweight but buildable. I whip this foundation out for important moments only, like interviews or date nights or when I really want to feel glamorous, making it ver versatile. It's so light you almost forget you have on foundation! And isn't that every makeup wearers dream? This product is like my personal secret weapon. I always get the most compliment when I use this. I defiantly would recommend that you treat yourself and add this foundation to your arsenal.
The Teint Idole Ultra Long Wear 24H Foundation comes in a tall 30ml frosted glass bottle with a convenient pump dispenser. The Lancome staple retails for $47 USD, making it not as expensive as the Giorgio Armani, but a fantastic formula nonetheless. This particular foundation has been revamped thrice throughout its reign, once in 2005, 2012 (which is the style that I own) and again in November of 2017. The name Teint Idole Ultra Long Wear 24h became Teint Idole Ultra Wear keeping its same great formula.
I love how diverse the range of shades are in this particular foundation. Dominating with 40 differing shades to choose from, this brand not only has the longevity but global appeal for all women looking to spice up their makeup routine.
This is an oil free liquid foundation coupled with SPF 15. The foundation is very easy to apply basically gliding across the skin. I have oily skin so finding foundations that are breathable and matte is key for me. And this does both, while providing light weight but full coverage.
Valued at $52 USD, not only does this foundation look great on my vanity but on my skin as well as a bonus that this brand offers. If I am paying top dollar I like for my packaging to be elegant. Dior's Forever Perfect foundation comes in a simple and classic matte glass bottle with a pump as well making for easy application and a chic look.
24 shades of forever perfectness to make women of all shades feel and look great. Although, numbers wise, its not up there with the likes of Fenty Beauty or Lancome the color range is more inclusive than the Kevyn Aucoin foundation.
A lot of darker foundation shades tend to have many red undertones in them, I find that this one isn't so overbearingly red and exuded my true skin tone. Very full coverage foundation that helps me eliminate some of the more textured areas on my face. Being semi matte does leave my skin looking more luminous and glowy. Armed with SPF 35 to help fight against harmful UV rays and strengthening your skin makes you feel as though you are truly leaving a designer lifestyle.
